about alinea
Conservation efforts in Africa are influenced by diverse ideological, political, and legal factors, leading to varying approaches to securing nature and communities at local, national, and regional levels. Alinea has emerged as a unifying force that works beyond being a mere funding conduit, we are a transformative intermediary working to empower Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), who in turn empower their governments and NGO partners.
Alinea was born from the recognition that a fragmented conservation landscape hinders progress. Capacity shortages, displaced threats, and limited access to funding for grassroots organizations create a pressing need for a unified approach. We exist to bridge these gaps, fostering collaboration, building resilience, and driving systemic change across the African continent. We align our efforts towards a common purpose: Safeguarding the vulnerable and combatting the exploitation of wildlife, the environment, and people.
How we work
Alinea serves as a catalyst for transformation by empowering NGOs across Africa and beyond to create lasting change. We champion a diverse range of organizations, fostering a holistic approach that tackles the root causes of environmental crime and empowers communities to thrive. Our support is multi-faceted, encompassing four key strategic priorities:
natural security
We bolster the capacity of organizations working to protect wildlife, combat illegal activities like poaching and trafficking, and ensure the safety and security of both people and the environment. This includes supporting initiatives focused on law enforcement, anti-poaching efforts, and community based conservation.
society
We recognize the critical role of communities in conservation efforts. We empower organizations working to promote social justice, human rights, and community development. This includes supporting initiatives that address poverty, improve livelihoods, and promote education and healthcare.
economics
We understand the complex relationship between economic development and environmental sustainability. We support organizations working to promote sustainable livelihoods, green investment, and responsible resource management. This includes initiatives that address poverty, create economic opportunities, and promote sustainable practices.
knowledge and research
We believe that informed action is the key to effective conservation. We support organizations conducting vital research, gathering data, and sharing knowledge to improve understanding of environmental challenges and identify innovative solutions. But more importantly to hear the challenges from the ground up.
Nothing Exists in Isolation
Alinea’s method of tackling exploitation is through supporting various partners who work on problems in holistic ways. To counter exploitation, approaches and partners need to be diverse, as focusing on the security and prosperity of communities and wildlife cannot be achieved through law enforcement actions alone.
Alinea is guided by supporting and conducting work on our strategic priorities by tackling the interconnectedness of problems. The challenges and problems we face do not exist in isolation, and success in one area strengthens and supports progress in others. For instance, empowering communities through social initiatives not only improves their well-being but also reduces their vulnerability to exploitation by criminal networks, thereby enhancing natural security. Above is our guiding matrix to ensure our efforts and partners address the multifaceted nature of suppressing environmental crime.
